How I treat suicide like a math problem

Every once in a while, thoughts of suicide will come into my mind. They come frequently enough that I’ve developed a strategy to deal with them. Imagine we have a complicated math problem written on…

Inauguration Week of NESIF Fellows.

NESIF is an acronym for North East Social Innovation Fellowship. It is a single program among the numerous programs being executed by NERI ( North East Regional Initiative) with thematic focus on countering violence extremism in the North East of Nigeria.

It is a rare opportunity to be one of the 45 fellows, but fortunately I was opportuned to be among the fellows inaugurated. The inauguration took place in Adamawa State at the AUN Hotel. It was beyond my expectation because it took us a whole week for the inauguration while I expect it to be a day or two days activities.

On the first day of the inauguration each fellow registered, ID cards T-shirts and Brochures were issued to us by the Centre for Social Justice. After completion of the registration, a welcome remarks were given by Mr. Eze Onyekpere and Adamawa State commissioner for information. The remarks given by the commissioner was inspiring, motivating and encouraging. Urging us to take the bull by the horn to change our society and live a good legacy to the younger generation. Certificates, Books and Tablets were also issued by Mr John as tools to be used in the course of the program.

The second day sessions were on briefing on NERI and the NESIF programs by Mr. John, Kusan and Zainab. It’s was fun and courageous, briefing us on the goals and objectives of the program. Later in the evening, Mr. Shariff the Chief Party of NERI also addressed us and had an interactive session with us of which our predecessor got this opportunity towards the end of their program. The sessions for the day were closed by selection of mood for the day and a one minute filming of Borno State fellows. We were asked on social innovation ideas and our expectations for the fellowship program.

The third day sessions is all about the different platforms of social media. These are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Medium. The sessions were facilitated by Mercy Abang, she is a Journalist and STTA Social Media Consultant. She lectured us on how to create the various social media platforms, how to use the platforms and also how to secure our accounts.

The fourth and the final days sessions were inspirational brain storming and motivating. The sessions were facilitated by Mr Femi Longe. He was a co founder of the co creation hub. He lectured us on Social innovation, Societal change, Design, Wicked problems and Concept development. During the training we were able to list some of the causes and effect of the violence extremism in the North East and develop a concept on solving a specific problem.

Apart from the sessions we were trained to work as a team and making friendship with individuals of different background, culture and religion. A big thanks to NERI and the staffs that are ever ready to assist in one way or the other.
