Becoming a heavy equipment mechanic will require you to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. You can then go on to complete a postsecondary or vocational program in diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics. On the job training is another possible route for aspiring heavy equipment mechanics, although many employers are now looking for potential hires to have completed a formal education program.

HVAC mechanics are heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration mechanics. They examine, maintain and repair systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings.

HVAC mechanics have some of the greatest job prospects out of careers in the mechanic industry. Job prospects for HVAC mechanics are expected to grow at a rate of 15% from 2016–2026, which is over double the rate for all careers!

HVAC mechanics typically need to have at least a high school education. From there, aspiring HVAC mechanics can complete postsecondary or technical schools, apprenticeships, and on the job training.

Diesel mechanics repair, maintain and inspect buses and trucks. Additionally, they may inspect, repair and maintain any type of diesel engine.

Diesel mechanics are a runner-up for best job prospects out of mechanic careers. The job prospects of diesel mechanics are expected to grow at a rate of 9% from 2016 to 2026, making it 2% above the average for all careers.

A lot of aspiring diesel mechanics pursue on the job training after completing a high school education, but it is becoming much more common for employers to seek potential employees that have attended postsecondary education programs. Postsecondary education programs and technical programs are available in diesel repair, and are a great educational route for aspiring diesel mechanics!
