As 2018 comes to a close, people across the world are setting themselves fitness goals for 2019. For many, these goals began with a FitBit.
This was me not too long ago. I wanted something to hold me accountable for how much I was moving (or not), so I asked for a FitBit for Christmas. Almost immediately after getting the FitBit, I was asked: “Does that thing really make a difference?”
Initially, I couldn’t say. But after maybe a week, I noticed a change. Sometimes, like on a lazy day, could sit on the couch for hours watching Netflix. Once an hour, my FitBit encourages me to get up and walk around a bit. It’s not much — the goal is 250 steps — but those are 250 steps I wouldn’t have otherwise taken.
On busier days, the step counter turned into a little game. Perhaps, the day before, I only took 2,000 steps. The next day, I wanted to beat it — even if only by a couple hundred. Because of my competitive nature, the amount of steps I took increased. My FitBit counts how many flights of stairs I took. It holds me accountable for how much water I drink. Because I see these numbers every time I look at my watch, I want to beat it. This has led me to be more active, more often.
I can’t say if a FitBit would really help you reach your fitness goals, because I am not you. But I can say that seeing the numbers right there — that knowing how good (or bad) I have been throughout the day, really helped me get active.
