Assignment 1 Retrospective

Doing the first assignment, I learned a lot about myself. It was an interesting journey in finding out what senses I use primarily, as well as some interesting uses of those senses that I was not aware of. I learned that I rely a lot on my seeing, and that I experience the world very visually. While I do notice that seeing is important to me, I always thought that something like hearing was equally as important due to the fact that I am always both watching with my eyes and listening with my ears, rarely using just one at a time. However, through doing this mind map, I learned that I do a lot of hearing passively, whereas I actively process a lot of information visually. Doing this assignment also helped me see how reliant I am on technology in my daily activities, and when I spend time without it, I am much less active in observing my world.

As far as the assignment itself, I think I could have bettered it in three ways. First, I could have organized my information better when it came to the mind map, as that would have made it easier to process the information present on it. I realized from looking at other people’s maps that while something might look clear to me as I’m doing it, it is perhaps hard for others to view the information, just as it was sometimes hard to understand other’s work. Secondly, I could have spent more time exploring other uses of my senses, as I’m not 100 percent sure I fully explored ways I interact with the world. Lastly, I could have improved the quality of my collage by adding more things that I am passionate about, as there were some things that I thought of later that did not make it onto the original collage.
