This Was An Ecological Wasteland. It Was Given Back to Nature

As a kid, I remember this area as an ecological wasteland. It has recovered well.

The big downside of living in a city is that cities usually don’t have much nature. You have the occasional parks, but they are often ecological disasters.

The following area in the east of the city is a good example of why.

The Wuhletal follows the small stream Wuhle for almost 16 km. All the way from its source to the place where it joins the Spree river.

Today, much of it is a nature reserve and breeding ground for many bird species. And a popular recreation destination for people in and around Berlin.

But it wasn’t always like that. I grew up here as a kid.

Back then, the Wuhle was a canal. It was primarily used to treat wastewater. The areas around the stream were left empty to compensate for the construction of countless DDR-style apartment blocks, much like the one where I live now.

But ecologically, it had nothing to offer, mostly for 2 reasons.

That changed in the late ’90s. The wastewater operations were shut down and the local government decided to remove the concrete walls that had turned the stream into a canal.

Now, the stream was free to find its natural flow and it did. In fact, you can now find fish in the stream again.
Also, what was mostly empty fields when I was a kid is now covered in wild shrubs and trees. It is wonderful.

I only recently moved back here after 25 years. When I took a walk today, I was surprised by how much Mother Nature had managed to reclaim.
