Do Certain Medicines Increase Your Dementia Risk?

SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED ABOUT MEDICINES and your own risk of cognitive impairment (for example, dementia)? There is mounting evidence of a connection between dementia and so-called anticholinergic drugs. Benadryl® is a commonly used medicine in this category.

Today we look at some drugs associated with cognitive impairment, such as memory loss.

The odds of dementia increased from 1.06-times in the lowest anticholinergic exposure category to 1.5-times in the highest, compared with those who had no anticholinergic drug prescriptions in the one to 11 years before the assessment.

Be careful with the long-term use of anticholinergic drugs. While causality has not been established, drugs such as Benadryl® are associated with dementia.
