What Is Social Dancing? A Detailed Introduction

Social dancing is something that some people would consider a thing of the past. Should it be that way?

Social dancing consists of ballroom dances. Some would consider them old or outdated unless you are at a wedding. I took a social dance class in college because I have been a dancer my whole life from when I was three until I graduated high school.

I missed dancing in college, though, so I decided to take a class they offered called social dancing. I loved it; it was different from what I grew up doing. I was used to ballet, tap, hip-hop, and lyrical. This was very different because you have to trust someone not to step on your toes. It will happen, especially when learning.

Sure it is not something that every person wants to do, but it is a great skill to have. Nobody wants to look awkward, and if you end up going to weddings having the skill definitely helps. Dancing can be difficult if you have never done it before because it is a muscle memory thing. The more practice you have in dance, the more natural it will look and the more comfortable you will be doing it.

Social dancing is not only a great way to exercise but can also make you feel more confidant. There is something about being able to do something that others can’t that makes you feel confident. Knowing how to social dance always looks impressive as it is considered to an extent forgotten or old fashioned.

The two main categories that all social dances fall into are either spot dancing or progressive dancing. There are some differences between the two and many different dances that can fall into these two types of dances.

Spot dancing, also known as slot dancing, is as it sounds when you stay in your spot or slot. There is no circling the dance room in these dances. You and your partner will stay in one spot on the dance floor and not circle around.
