Remembering Gary Carter

By Jay Horwitz

I can’t believe we lost Kid 10 years ago today.

It some respects it seems like he passed just yesterday. The last time I saw Gary alive was a month before his death. Jeff Wilpon and I flew down to Palm Beach Gardens, FL to visit him at his home. I remember to this day how he greeted us at the door, “Don’t worry JJ, I will beat this thing.”

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as cancer had spread to his brain. But that was Gary to a tee. He never gave up, no matter what the situation.

He was the one who started the famous two out rally in the bottom of the 10th against the Red Sox. He told me later that there was no way he was going to make the last out.

Not only was Gary a Hall of Fame baseball player, he was a Hall of Fame person. He cared about people. I broke my ankle in September, 2011 and despite the fact that Gary was going through his own cancer battle, he called me every week to see how I was doing.

He loved by play for the fans, loved being in the community and loved raising awareness to help combat leukemia.

Miss you Kid. Think about you a lot.
