Tecsun PL880 Shortwave Radio Receiver

This is a short review of the Tecsun PL880 shortwave radio, one of the best shortwave receivers for SWL available in 2020. Please check this Medium publication: Shortwave Radio Listening, the Essential Guide for more information and guides on shortwave listening.

When I started looking for a shortwave listening (SWL) radio, I had a few requirements:

It is sufficiently large to use at home and compact and light enough to travel. I bought mine one year ago and used it often at home, at work, and on trips. It works great and I enjoy every minute of using it.

It includes everything in the requirements list above, and more:

* The external antenna is essentially just a long wire; you could just use any long wire, throw one end out of the window or into a tree, and wrap the other end around the whip antenna. However, when you move the receiver, the poor electrical connection with a random wire will result in loud noises. Also, when traveling, the wire will probably turn into a tangled mess. The included external antenna solves both problems in a small and light package.
