The Peas That Hurt Us Are Often Invisible to Others

It’s up to us to honor our sensitivity and remove those peas

Just like in the fairy tale ‘The Princess and the Pea’, the peas that hurt us are often invisible to the people around us, and thus unacknowledged by them. It takes courage to say, “Yes, I’m lying on top of 20 luxuriously soft mattresses and 20 more feather beds, but still this pea that you can’t see is hurting me!”

When we shout out our pain to others, they can’t relate at all. They might still be sensitive, but in different ways. Sometimes, we don’t even know there’s a pea that’s causing all this pain, but the pain we’re feeling is real. We need to first acknowledge that and rely on our sensitivity to feel for that pea, so we can remove it. Or it can be a matter of finding another more comfortable bed, in a way that actually feels comfortable to us. Perhaps we feel even better sleeping less and dancing more!

Let us not be ashamed of our sensitivity, or force others to try to understand what we’re going through. We just need to honor our sensitivity and keep recreating a more supportive environment for us.
