Giselle’s ceremony included an intimate test of denial for her husband

Giselle knew the risk she was taking when Robert reached across the cafe table and held her hand. They were both settled in their careers, had been dating for months, and dropped hints about living a life together and forever.

But she had to speak the truth in her heart.

“I love it when you don’t fuck me.”

Robert smirked at first, but Giselle remained steady and looked him in the eye.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“When you’re gone on business, you write me so many amazing messages and take the time to actually mail a letter or two,” said Giselle. “But when you’re home and we’ve had a time to make love then it seems you’re no longer interested after you’re finished.”

Robert withdrew his hand and she brushed back her chestnut hair. She had envisioned marriage with Robert and could see that he’d make a wonderful husband. She figured all men were like him, but she had read that controlling his orgasm would also lead to controlling his heart.

The couple drove home in silence and Robert pulled up the curb in front of Giselle’s house. “You’ve given me a lot to think about.”

He kissed her on the cheek, they wished each other a pleasant night and she got out. He drove off and she wondered if, indeed, such a life was even possible.

She went to bed and decided that if it wasn’t going to be Robert, then it would be a man who would submit to her control.

The concert at the Hollywood Bowl with Robert was special. So was the hike and dinner along the coast of Malibu. But they said little.

Finally, days later, while gardening behind Giselle’s house, Robert spoke up.

“I love you,” his voice quivered. “And the life that you want — I can’t give it to you. I can’t.”

She knelt and smoothed dirt around the rose bushes. “I understand.”
