Blue Skies Finally Appear After Weeks of Rain

The typically grey and rainy skies of Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus the past few weeks have finally subsided.

Louisiana’s climate typically tends to be less than desirable for those who love blue skies and cool breezes. With nearly 108 days of rain on average for a typical year in New Orleans according to U.S. Climate Data, it could seem to some that rain is always around and inescapable.

With rain taking up almost every day of the past few weeks, for many, this streak of sunny days and cool breezes is a welcome change to the monotony of grey and wet.

With the rain gone and the sun shining, many students can be seen taking their studies outdoors. Thanks to the fact it is the middle of March, no humidity is sending students back inside.

The yearly average humidity in Baton Rouge is around 74 percent according to the World Data Center for Meteorology. This level of humidity can give off the impression to many that they are drowning in air. It can also make people feel really sticky and sweaty with relatively no work in the sun required.

David Cade, a student at SLU, stated, “It is nice to be able to go outside and not have to worry about your papers getting sticky while also being able to feel the sun’s warmth. I have been waiting for this for so long.”

The quickly changing weather has been found to affect people with allergies negatively. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, warming or warmer weather can cause pollen to float around for longer. This leads to the few pretty days being not long enough for people with allergies to adjust.

Due to Louisiana’s odd seasons and quickly changing weather conditions, allergy issues could flare up for some. Nick Adams, an SLU student, stated, “I love the weather, but I have to make sure I am fully doped up on allergy meds before going out. This weather can be brutal, no matter how nice it feels.”

As one can see, the allergies that come along with pretty weather is not stopping most from enjoying it.
